Skat Club

When:  Friday Nights

In today's rapidly changing world, many young people have been deprived of the rewarding experience of playing cards.  Within the home, cards are rarely played because they seem to interface with other accepted activities, such as television viewing.  Likewise, outside the home, social functions planned for today's youth seldom include organized card playing.

History of American Skat
This delightful card game was developed in Germany shortly before the year 1811 and was brought to this country by early settlers.  Elements of Skat appear to have been derived from the Wendish game of Schafskopf.  With the background of Tarock, Solo, and Ombre games, the parent game gradually revised and this hybrid game finally developed receiving the name of "Skat".  In Tarock, an Italian game two cards were away which were called "Skat" cards.  The word "Skat" is evidently derived from the Italian "Scatola", a box or place of safekeeping.  By 1880 Skat was well established in America and over the succeeding years improvements were made upon the original game.

Brooklyn, New York, conducted the first Skat Congress of importance in 1887.  The next year Milwaukee was host to an invitational congress, Detroit was the scence of a similar event in 1892, while Indianapolis sponsored a large gathering in 1897.

So why not drop in on a Friday night and join us in learning this socially wonderful game and make some great new friends at the same time.
